Minnesota at No. 14 Ohio State (minus 18)

Ohio State leads the series 40-7 and is 20-3 at home against the Gophers. The last time Ohio State (3-1) lost to Minnesota (4-0) in Columbus was the 17-29 shocker in the year 2000.

Terrelle Pryor is the toast of the town, but Minnesota’s Adam Weber might be the quarterback everyone is 36talking about after the game. The sophomore has thrown for 967 yards and seven touchdowns this season. Weber has a talented receiver in Eric Decker. Last season Decker caught 67 passes, a Minnesota record. This season he leads the Big Ten in receiving yards (454) and receptions (32).

Many people believe the malaise Ohio State is suffering is because of the offense. However, the defense is not performing to the standard of past Ohio State teams. The defensive unit appears to react to the action instead of dictating the action. This supported by the fact that the Buckeyes are ranked 99th in the country in tackles for loss. If Ohio State can’t get to Weber and running back DeLeon Eskridge behind the line of scrimmage, Minnesota will be able to rack up the yards and points.

THE VIEW
Jim Morrison used to sing, “Come on baby, light my fire.” Today Ohio State fans are singing, “Come on baby, Terrelle Pryor.” This is Ohio State’s 119th season and the Buckeyes are 119-10-4 at home in September. With Beanie and Pryor playing you can make that 120-10-4.

No. 8 Alabama at No. 3 Georgia (minus 7)

NO. 8 ALABAMA AT NO. 3 GEORGIA (MINUS 6.5)
This will be the sixth meeting for Georgia and Alabama with both teams being nationally ranked. Georgia has never lost when both teams are ranked. Alabama leads the series 35-25-4.

Both teams feature stout defenses. Alabama’s defense is holding opponents to 55 rushing yards and fewer than ten points per game. The most points the Crimson Tide has allowed this season are the 14 points Arkansas scored last week.

Georgia’s defense is equally impressive. With the help of linebacker Rennie Curran-three sacks, 29 tackles and five tackles for loss-the Bulldogs keep the opposition to less than 46 yards rushing and below 14 points a game.

Georgia has two playmakers in freshman receiver A.J. Green and running back Knowshon Moreno. Last week Green had eight catches for 159 yards and a touchdown. Moreno rushed for 149 yards and two touchdowns against Arizona State.

Quarterback Matthew Stafford, running back Knowshon Moreno and freshman receiver A.J. Green lead Georgia’s offense. Last week Green had eight catches for 159 yards and a touchdown. Moreno rushed for 149 yards and two touchdowns against Arizona State.

I liked Nick Saban and Alabama’s chances at pulling off the upset until Georgia announced that they are going to wear black jerseys. The Bulldogs are undefeated the two previous times they donned the black uniforms.

NO. 22 Illinois at No. 12 Penn State (minus 15)

Penn State (4-0) leads the series 12-3 and has not lost in five home games against Illinois. Joe Paterno has a 10-2 record against Illinois (4-0). The Illini won 27-20 last year.

Although Juice Williams and Illinois’ offense is ranked second in the Big Ten in total offense (469 yards) and scoring defense (36.33), Penn State’s defense is going to pose a stiff challenge.

Navorro Bowman and Aaron Maybin will be looking to put the squeeze on Juice. Last week, Bowman made 11 tackles, five tackles for loss, three sacks, an interception and forced a fumble in a 45-3 victory over Temple; he was named last week’s Big Ten Defensive Player. Maybin leads the Big Ten with six sacks.

With a victory Paterno will stay at least one game ahead of Bobby Bowden in the victory column.

This will be Joe Tiller’s final game against Notre Dame as Purdue’s head coach. He defeated Notre Dame the first game he faced them in 1997. Tiller will finish 6-6 against the Irish by defeating them one final time.

No. 5 Ohio State at No. 1 USC (minus 10.5)

USC leads the series 11-9-1 and is 7-6-1 against the Buckeyes in the regular season. 1946 was the last time Ohio State defeated the Trojans in Los Angeles. 2001 was the last time Southern Cal lost a regular season non-conference home game; Kansas State defeated the Trojans 10-6.

For all of attention Beanie Wells and his foot have been garnering, USC has a couple of guys deserving of some ink as well. C.J. Gable and Joe McKnight lead a talented group of running backs that Pete Carroll will rotate against Ohio State’s 17th ranked rush defense.

The View
Many people feel that this year’s judgment day has arrived for the Ohio State football team and its fans. Many across the country are looking forward to another opportunity to revel in the glow of another Ohio State loss on national television.

Ohio State fans take heart, if the Buckeyes lose you won’t have to wait until the championship game to have your title hopes dashed. Then again, those hopes may still be alive.

Ohio State 27, USC 20

No. 10 Wisconsin at No. 21 Fresno State (plus 1.5)

The series is tied 1-1. The away team is undefeated. In 2001 Fresno State won 23-19 in Madison. The following year Wisconsin won 23-21 in Fresno.

Fresno State’s coach Pat Hill had to be pleased with the play of quarterback Tom Brandstater, running back Ryan Mathews (163 yards) and wide receiver Seyi Ajirotutu (3 receptions, 116 yards) against Rutgers two weeks ago. Brandstater, Mathews and Ajirotutu will need strong games this week because the Bulldogs defense should face a tough challenge from Wisconsin’s offense.

To the delight of first year starting quarterback Allen Evridge, Wisconsin’s P.J. Hill (267 yards, four touchdowns) has shouldered much of the Badgers offense. If Hill and John Clay can find lanes to run the ball Wisconsin can win what might turn into Saturday night’s most exciting game.

No. 2 Georgia at South Carolina (plus 7)

Georgia leads the series 44-14-2. Steve Spurrier is 12-3 against Georgia during his coaching career, but is 1-2 as South Carolina’s head coach.

After two games Georgia’s Knowshon Moreno has amassed 227 yards and six touchdowns. Even more impressive is that he is gaining 8.7 yards per carry. Moreno could jump to the forefront of the Heisman race with a strong showing against the Gamecocks. South Carolina has never defeated a team ranked first or second in the nation. That streak should continue.

No. 3 Oklahoma at Washington (plus 20)

Oklahoma tied this series 1-1 after defeating Washington 37-20 in 2006.

Oklahoma (2-0) is ranked in the top 15 in most offensive and defensive statistical categories. Sam Bradford’s arm and the legs of DeMarco Murray and Chris Brown have contributed to the Sooners scoring 109 points in two games.

Washington (0-2) lost a heartbreaker last week. When Washington’s fans take a look at the Huskies’ offensive and defensive rankings they might suffer a heart attack. Washington is ranked 97th in total offense and 112th in total defense. If Washington’s quarterback, Jake Locker, isn’t deflated by last week’s outcome he could keep this game close.

This game will be a glimpse into the future of both programs. Michigan (1-1) will showcase running back Sam McGuffie and linebacker Obi Eleh. Notre Dame fans will hang their hats on bruising running back Robert Hughes and wide receiver Golden Tate. Notre Dame (1-1) may finish the season with a decent record, but Michigan will give the Irish their first of at least three losses.

No. 16 Oregon at Purdue (plus 8)

This will be the first meeting between Oregon (2-0) and Purdue (1-0).

What significance does Jack Mollenkopf have to this game? Joe Tiller is currently tied with Mollenkopf with 84 victories as Purdue’s head coach. A win on Saturday will put Tiller alone at the top.

September 13th has been a good day for Joe Tiller. On September 13, 1997 Tiller defeated Notre Dame for his first career victory as Purdue’s head coach. With a win on this September 13th Tiller will have earned his 85th victory as head coach at Purdue surpassing Jack Mollenkopf for the most victories at Purdue.

UCLA at No. 18 BYU (minus 8.5)

BYU’s last defeat was to UCLA 27-17 last season. UCLA leads the series 7-2.

This game features some talented players, but the names of the heads coaches steal the show. UCLA’s Rick Neuheisel and BYU’s Bronco Mendenhall have some of the better names in football. Neuheisel is just fun to say and what other profession could Bronco Mendenhall have with his name? Could he have been an accountant? I don’t think so. Bronco bucks Rick.

Thursday, September 4, 2008

Ohio State is a 34-point favorite for Saturday’s noon kickoff against Ohio in Ohio Stadium. The Buckeyes are 5-0 against Ohio and have outscored the Bobcats 135-16.

Ohio’s quarterback, Theo Scott, completed 26 passes for 224 yards in last week’s 21-20 loss to Wyoming. Surprisingly, OU receiver Taylor Price currently leads the FBS with 14 receptions. The Bobcats also have a dangerous player in Donte Harden. Harden is ranked second in the nation averaging 56 yards per kickoff return. The running game is an area in which Ohio needs to improve. The Bobcats only gained 39 rushing yards against Wyoming.

The Buckeyes’ defense held Youngstown State to an impressive negative eleven yards rushing. Only Oklahoma’s defense has allowed fewer total yards than the 74 YSU gained against Ohio State. The duo of Brandon Saine and Daniel “Boom” Herron has improved Ohio State’s kick return game to 16th in the nation. That is much better than last season’s ranking of 117.

The View
It should be a tough task for the Bobcats to move the ball on the ground against Ohio State. If Ohio attempts 35 passes in this game, Mr. Scott might have a section of the turf permanently implanted in his backside. With or without Beanie, Ohio State’s defense will overwhelm the Bobcats. You can’t spell Ohio without the 0.

Ohio State 45, Ohio 0

Random Notes
Ryan Pretorius is tied for the national lead with four made field goals.

The Bobcats’ defense did not record a sack and only had two tackles for loss. Ohio held Wyoming to 111 yards passing, but let the Cowboys rush for 160 yards.

Sophomore linebacker Noah Keller made 15 tackles last week.
Senior linebacker Chris Hall had nine tackles.

Oregon State at No. 19 Penn State (minus 15.5)

This will be the first time Oregon State (0-1) and Penn State (1-0) have played one another on the football field.

This game will feature two offenses that move the ball by opposite means. Look for Oregon State to allow quarterback Lyle Moevao to attempt over forty passes. Last week Moevao completed 34 of 54 passes for 404 yards in the 28-36 loss to Stanford. Senior wide receivers Shane Morales and Sammie Stroughter combined for 26 of the 34 completions and 306 of the 404 yards.

On the other sideline Penn State should hitch its offense on the backs of Evan Royster, Stephon Green and Brent Carter. Although quarterback Daryll Clark was sharp against Coastal Carolina, Paterno and company would be more than happy if the Nittany Lions can duplicate last week’s 334 rushing yards.

Penn State 38, Oregon State 24

Random Notes
Penn State is ranked in the top ten in the following offensive categories: sacks allowed, rushing, scoring, and total offense.

Defensive end Aaron Maybin accounted for two of Penn State’s four sacks.

Oregon State has the nation’s fifth ranked passing offense (404 yards) and 16th ranked defense against the pass.

Sophomore wide receiver James Rodgers is ranked fourth in the nation with 247 all-purpose yards.

Miami at No. 5 Florida (minus 22)

Saturday’s game will be the 54th meeting between Miami (1-0) and Florida (1-0). Miami has won six-straight games against Florida and leads the series 28-25.

Even if Percy Harvin and Brandon Spikes don’t play in this game the Gators will still have plenty of talent to dispatch of the Hurricanes. With Tim Tebow, Chris Rainey, Kestahn Moore and Emmanuel Moody in the backfield Florida should defeat Miami in Gainesville for the first time since 1983.

Florida 30, Miami 13

No. 8 West Virginia at East Carolina (plus 7.5)

East Carolina (1-0) lost to West Virginia 48-7 last year. The Mountaineers (1-0) have won seven-straight in the series and hold a 17-2 advantage.

East Carolina’s defense was able to hold Virginia Tech to 243 total yards of offense last week. ECU quarterback Patrick Pinkney completed 19 of 23 passes for 211 yards in large part because his offensive line kept the Hokies from sacking him.

It is unlikely that East Carolina will be able to keep West Virginia’s offense under 243 yards. Last week the Mountaineers’ multi-talented quarterback, Patrick White, gained 271 total yards. West Virginia’s defense has already recorded six sacks and will have Pinkney in its sights.

Lightning doesn’t strike twice for East Carolina.

Minnesota at Bowling Green (minus 6)

This game will mark the third time Minnesota (1-0) and Bowling Green (1-0) have played each other. Last season Bowling Green won 32-31 to tie the series 1-1.

Bowling Green took advantage of a plus-three turnover margin (third nationally) to defeat Pittsburgh last week. The Falcon’s defense was led by safety Jahmal Brown’s 14 tackles and corner back Antonio Smith’s 12 tackles. Both Brown and Smith should see extensive action again this week as they face Adam Weber and Minnesota’s pass happy offense.

Minnesota broke a ten-game losing streak last week, but will start a new losing streak this week.

Bowling Green 27, Minnesota 20

Random Notes
Minnesota’s defense had eight tackles for loss last week against Northern Illinois. Barrett Moen had 1.5 sacks. Offense threw for 298 yards.

Bowling Green is ranked third nationally with a plus-three turnover margin. The Falcons recorded four sacks in the 27-17 victory against Pittsburgh.
