The 2006 college football season had its winners (Florida, Boise State and Division IAA schools) and losers (Duke, FIU and non-BCS bowl games). What are some of the topics and questions heading into the 2007 season? Let’s take a look.

Repeat for Florida? The basketball team did it, why not the football team? Blame the SEC schedule and lack of a playoff system for putting a damper on the Gators’ chances for a repeat. Florida will be a great team, but not strong enough to escape playing Tennessee, Auburn, LSU, Georgia and Florida State undefeated. If the Gators do make it through that schedule they still have to win the SEC Championship game. Repeat? Doubtful.

Which teams will play in the BCS National Championship Game? This question should be who will be playing USC in the title game? USC is looking like last year’s Ohio State. The only difference is that the men of Troy appear to be more talented and deeper on both sides of the ball. The possible stumbling blocks for the Trojans would be their schedule or their egos. The teams that have the inside track at meeting up with USC in New Orleans are: Florida (even with their schedule), the winner of the Oklahoma/Texas game and West Virginia. I’m giving the early edge to West Virginia because they play in the Big Least, err, I mean Big East.

IAA Domination is what appeared to happen at the start of the 2006 season. Four Division IAA schools defeated the big boys to start last season, including Montana State’s stunning 19-10 victory over Colorado.

At least one Division IAA team won in each of the first four weeks. Northern Iowa almost made it five weeks until Iowa State outscored them by eight in the fourth quarter for a 28-27 victory. From 2003-2005 IAA teams combined for 18 wins against Division I teams. Last year the small guys were able to win seven games. With more Division I schools scheduling their diminutive brethren more shockers are sure to follow.

The longest winning streak in Division I belongs to Boise State at 13 games. The Broncos were also the only undefeated team in 2006. Duke (0-12) and Florida International (0-12) were the only teams not to win a game last season. Duke has lost 22 consecutive games against Division I schools.

Another BCS surprise from Boise State is not likely to happen again this year. Utah was the first non-BCS school to shock the big boys when they earned a spot in the 2005 Fiesta Bowl and spanked Pittsburgh 35-7. However the Utes were 7-5 the following year. Boise State does have a chance to return to the BCS party, but losing Jared Zabransky and playing at Washington, Fresno State and Hawaii might be too much to overcome. Not to mention all of the hype they will have to contend with after last season’s dramatic OT victory over Oklahoma.
