No. 8 Ohio State at Minnesota Week 5

Since 1969 No. 8 Ohio State is 32-2 against Minnesota. The Buckeyes have outscored the Gophers 1,160-447 in those 34 games. Ohio State leads the series 39-7 and is 19-4 at Minnesota.

Todd Boeckman is ranked tenth in the nation among quarterbacks in pass efficiency. His rating of 172.6 should improve against Minnesota's defenseless pass defense. The Gophers' defense is as putrid as Notre Dame's offense. Minnesota ranks last in pass defense, total defense and turnover margin.

Minnesota's offense can't be blamed for this season's 1-3 start. Led by dual threat quarterback Adam Webster the Gophers have scored at least 31 points each game. Webster has already thrown for 1,031 yards and 11 touchdowns. He has rushed for 257 yards and two touchdowns.

The Buckeyes' defense will also have to contain running back Amir Pinnix (5.7 yards per carry) and receivers Eric Decker and Ernie Wheelwright. Decker and Wheelwright have combined for 626 yards and nine touchdowns.

The View's Take
Jim Tressel is 4-0 against the Gophers winning by an average score of 39-16. This should be another easy win for Tressel, provided nobody else takes a stroll down High Street. Does Ohio State, a 24-point favorite, travel to Minneapolis with a welcome mat that says “Dome Sweet Dome”?

No. 1 USC at Washington Week 5

Which wide receiver, Vidal Hazelton or David Ausberry, leads USC in receiving yards in 2007? Neither. Tight end Fred Davis leads the Trojans with 211 receiving yards. Washington's Jake Locker is looking more like a Heisman candidate than USC's John David Booty. However, Booty will look like a winner after USC beats Washington for the sixth time in six games.

DI-AA Watch

Everyone knows that Appalachian State pulled off the improbable
against Michigan. However, did you know that five other DI-AA
schools have defeated DI schools this season?

Last season only four DI-AA schools defeated DI schools.
Look for North Dakota State, Gardner-Webb, Central Conn. State
or Portland State to pull off the improbable this week.

Northwestern at No. 8 Ohio State Week 4

Ohio State is 32-8 at home against Northwestern. 1971 was the last time the Wildcats, a 22 point underdog, won in Ohio Stadium.

Northwestern's quarterback, C.J. Bacher, has thrown for 838 yards this season. 368 of those yards came last week against Duke. Wide receiver Ross Lane has 14 receptions for 179 yards.
If Tyrell Sutton can't play (bum ankle) look for Brandon Roberson (5.6 yards per carry, 2 touchdowns) to take his place.

Ohio State's Beanie Wells (5.4 ypc) and Brandon Saine (5.5 ypc) are becoming the one-two punch that Maurice Wells was hoping to be apart of this year. Brian Robiskie's 342 receiving yards have him tied for the lead in the Big Ten.

Like last year, James Laurinaitis has his name all over Ohio State's defensive statistics. The “Little Animal” leads the team in interceptions, tackles and sacks.

The Views Take
For a brief time in the recent past Northwestern actually gave Ohio State fans some pause for concern. Today the men in purple are back to the Mildcats of old.

No. 10 Penn State at Michigan Week 4

Remember when John Cooper took a lot of heat for not beating Michigan? Joe Paterno has lost eight straight to the Wolverines. If Joe Pa wants to claim his first victory since 1996 three things must happen.

First, his defense must shut down Mike Hart and his Big 10 leading 507 rushing yards.

Second, tailbacks Austin Scott and Rodney Kinlaw need to maintain their 4.5 and 6.1 yards per carry average.

Third, Michigan's Ryan Mallet must play like a freshman quarterback.

Michigan State at Notre Dame Week 4

Let's play “Name That Team”.

Name the team that is tied for first in the nation with 17 sacks and is ranked third with 31 tackles for loss. If you said Michigan State you are correct.

Name the team that is ranked last in scoring offense (13 total points), last in rushing offense (-14 yards) and total offense (115 yards per game). Notre Dame is the right answer.

Finally, name the team that hasn't lost in South Bend since 1993. Michigan State will continue that winning streak on Saturday.

No. 10 Ohio State at Washington Week 3

The first game in this series was an Ohio State victory in Washington back in 1957. The Buckeyes lead the series (7-3). Ohio State is 3-2 at Washington, but has lost the last two games in Seattle.

The Players
A strong second half against Akron has bumped Beanie Wells' average yards per game up to 94. Brian Robiskie leads the team with 13 receptions and is 11th in the nation with 235 receiving yards. Todd Boeckman threw his first two interceptions of his career last week. James Laurinaitis has a team high 14 tackles.

Washington's offense is led by quarterback Jake Locker and tailback Louis Rankin. Locker has gained 502 yards of offense and Rankin has 202 all-purpose yards. Anthony Reece (9 receptions) and Marcel Russo (8 receptions) are Locker's primary receivers. E.J. Savannah and Roy lewis lead the team in tackles.

The View
The 2007 Buckeyes are like a tired song we’ve heard before. The offense has yet to find an identity and the defense is leaned on to win games. Many questions are being asked going into this contest.
Can No. 10 Ohio State defeat Washington in Seattle for the first time since 1969?

Will Washington's defense shut down Ohio State's running game like it did Ian Johnson of Boise State?

Last week the Huskies ended Boise State's 14 game winning streak. Will they be able to stop the Buckeyes' 20 game regular season winning streak?

Can Ohio State's defense keep Jake Locker and Louis Rankin from reaching the end zone?

The answer sheet shows yes once and no three times.

Notre Dame at Michigan Week 3

Notre Dame at Michigan (minus 8)
The Players
Michael Hart is doing his part with 315 yards and three touchdowns in the two losses. The injured Chad Henne will be replaced with true freshman Ryan Mallet. Mario Manningham has 11 receptions 183 receiving yards. Shawn Crable leads the defense with 18 tackles and four TFL.

Notre Dame's offense has been offensive. Armando Allen leads the team with 36 yards rushing. Wide receiver David Grimes has 6 receptions for 49 yards. The defense has had plenty of time to make tackles. Trevor Laws and Joe Brockington have combined for 36 stops.

The View
Something has to give in this game. Worthy or not, one of these teams will pick up its first victory of the season. Michigan's porous defense will match inferiority with Notre Dame's incompetent offense. The Irish are ranked last in rushing offense (-8 yards), total offense (266 yards) and sacks allowed (15).

The Wolverines’ defense is almost as inept as Notre Dame's offense. Ranked 109th against the run, 108th in total defense and 101st in scoring defense Michigan is poised to let Notre Dame’s offense cross the goal line for the first time.

Mike Hart guarantees a victory. I guarantee one of two things. If Michigan loses it will be the first time the Wolverines start a season by losing the first three games at home. If Notre Dame loses it will be the second time the Irish start 0-3 (2001).

No. 22 Tennessee at No. 5 Florida Week 3

No. 22 Tennessee at No. 5 Florida (minus 8)
The Players
Tennessee's running back, Arian Foster, has gained 346 all-purpose yards this season. Quarterback Erik Ainge spreads the ball around to Lucas Taylor, Austin Rogers, Josh Briscoe and Chris Brown. Rico McCoy and Jerod Mayo have each recorded 14 tackles

Tim Tebow has the second best passing efficiency rating in the country. Tebow has also tallied 667 yards of offense by air and ground. When Tebow doesn't run look for to be carrying the ball. When Tebow passes Cornelius Ingram and Andre Riley Cooper lead a talented group of receivers. Brandon Spikes leads the Gators with 10 tackles and 2.5 tackles for loss.

The View
With a victory against Tennessee Saturday Urban Meyer will become the first Florida coach to start his career 3-0 against the Vols. That task will become more difficult with the loss of receiver Andre Caldwell (ACL) for the season. However, Tim Tebow's 536 yards passing, 131 rushing yards and ten touchdowns should be enough for Florida to win. Meyer will improve his record to 16-0 in Ben Hill Griffin Stadium.

The History
These two storied programs have only played each other three times. Last season and a home and home series in 1969 and 1970. USC won last year (28-10) and at Nebraska in 1969 (31-21). The schools tied 21-21 in 1970. USC will stay undefeated against the Cornhuskers.

The View
USC defeated Nebraska 28-10 last season in the L.A. Coliseum and leads the series 2-0-1. The stars will be out Saturday night as both teams have talented players on both sides of the ball.

Nebraska's Marlon Lucky is ranked 5th in the nation averaging 161.5 rushing yards a game. Quarterback Sam Keller, wide receiver Terrence Nunn and safety Larry Asante are the Cornhuskers to watch.

John David Booty needs a better performance than he had against Idaho. Receivers Stanley Havili and David Ausberry along with tight end Fred Davis will help Booty start his Heisman campaign. C.J. Gable and Stafon Johnson are the lead studs in a backfield of thoroughbreds. Linebacker Keith Rivers anchors a talented and deep defensive unit.

Ohio at No. 18 Virginia Tech Week 3

Ohio at No. 18 Virginia Tech (minus 20.5)
The Players
As Kalvin McRae goes so does the Bobcats' offense. So far McRae has racked up 226 yards on the ground, 288 all-purpose yards and a nation leading six touchdowns. Brad Bower has filled in nicely for the graduated Austin Everson. Wide receiver Chris Garrett leads the team with seven receptions. Jordan Meyers has recorded 16 tackles, two tackles for loss and a sack.

Sean Glennon is out at quarterback. Glennon who started in Virginia Tech's last 15 games will be replaced by freshman Tyrod Taylor. Taylor played in his first collegiate game against LSU's defense, arguably the nation's best. Branden Ore is the featured running back. Receivers Sam Wheeler and Justin Harper lead the Hokies in receiving yards. Vince Hall (21), Xavier Adii (19) and Brandon Flowers (19) lead the team in tackles.

The View
The Hokies' ailing offense might get a jump start from freshman quarterback Tyrod Taylor. However, the Bobcats' 95th ranked defense might be the perfect remedy for Virginia Tech's 111th ranked offense.

Virginia Tech leads the series 3-0 and has outscored Ohio 135-50. Ohio is going to need Kalvin McRae to triple his NCAA leading six touchdowns for the Bobcats to catch up in total points scored.

Pittsburgh at Michigan State Week 3

Pittsburgh at Michigan State (minus 10.5)
The Players
Tailbacks LeSean McCoy and LaRod Stephens-Howlin have combined for 245 rushing yards. McCoy leads the Panthers with 3 touchdowns.

Junior Brian Hoyer has filled in nicely for the all-everything Drew Stanton. The Spartans' quarterback has made a new friend in receiver Devin Thomas. Thomas has 9 receptions for 262 yards. Thomas is also ranked 10th in the nation with 408 all-purpose yards. The running duo of Javon Ringer and Hehuu Caulcrick have also taken some of the pressure off of Hoyer. Jonal Saint-Dic and Kellen Davis have combined for five of Michigan State's 12 sacks.

The View
Pittsburgh has never defeated Michigan State. At the end of this game they will still be looking for that first victory.

Florida International at Miami Week 3

Florida International at Miami (minus 33)
The View
Miami Mayhem Part II? Doubtful, but the Hurricanes will inflict much pain on the Golden Panthers. Kyle Wright will return as Miami's starting quarterback. Graig Cooper and Javarris James should pad their not-so impressive rushing stats.

Florida International's running backs should be in for a long day. Their leading rusher, Julian Reams, only has 33 yards for the season.

Akron at No. 12 Ohio State Week 2

No. 12 Ohio State is 5-1 against Akron. The Zips, lead by John Heisman (the trophy guy), defeated the Buckeyes in 1894. The last meeting was a 28-14 victory for Ohio State in 2001.

After nursing an ankle injury Ray Small should be back on the field this week against Akron.
Will Beanie Wells look like the runner he was for the majority of 2006? If not, Brandon Saine has the explosiveness to be this season's most exciting back. Robert Rose and Cameron Heyward will try to fill in for injured defensive end Lawrence Wilson. Anderson Russell and the rest of the secondary should be primed to intercept at least one pass from Akron's inexperienced quarterback.

In his first start quarterback Chris Jacquemain threw 14 completions for 128 yards for a win against Army. Wide receiver Jabari Arthur had 11 receptions and 125 yards. Dennis Kennedy led all rushers with 72 yards on 13 carries. Reggie Corner had a 74 yard interception return for a touchdown. Linebacker Brion Stokes and defensive back Brandon Anderson were able to combine for two sacks and four tackles for loss.

The View
It was once asked if a tree fell in the woods and nobody was around to hear it, did the tree make a noise?
I now ask, if you have Time Warner Cable and Ohio State plays on the Big Ten Network; did the 28.5 point favorite Buckeyes play a game?

Oregon at Michigan Week 2

Oregon at Michigan (Minus 8.5)
What do 1928, 1936 and 1959 have in common? Those are the only years that Michigan lost its first two games of the season at home. Oregon’s scrambling quarterback, Dennis Dixon, and speedy running backs Jeremiah Johnson and Jonathon Stewart look to add 2007 to that short list.

Notre Dame at No. 14 Penn State

Notre Dame at No. 14 Penn State (Minus 17.5)
Negative eight yards rushing, nine sacks allowed and 122 yards of total offense is what Notre Dame accumulated under the guidance of offensive genius Charlie Weis last week. Penn State’s young cubs, Derrick Williams, Deon Butler, and Anthony Morelli are now lions and are ready to feast on the Irish team that embarrassed them 41-17 last year.

Miami at No. 5 Oklahoma

Miami at No. 5 Oklahoma (Minus 11)
Oklahoma has lost the last three contests against the Hurricanes. However, Miami is not the same team it was in the 1980s. The Sooners currently lead the nation with 668 total yards of offense and will use running backs DeMarco Murray and Mossis Madu to lower the boom on a Miami team that has lost its swagger.

This is only the second meeting between the Hokies and Tigers. In 2002 Virginia Tech defeated LSU 26-8 in Blacksburg. The out-of-whack stat for this game is Virginia Tech’s negative two turnover margin and zero sacks recorded for the season. LSU’s defense will improve upon its nation leading six interceptions and even this series up.

No. 22 Boise State at Washington

No. 22 Boise State at Washington (Plus 3)
Washington is Ohio State’s next opponent thus making this a game of interest. Is Washington’s rush defense (8 yards allowed) and pass rush (7 sacks) the real deal? Ian Johnson and Boise State’s running attack will be a better measuring stick of the Huskies’ defense than what Syracuse provided.

Boise State- 36 Washington- 28

Saturday, September 1, 2007

The 2006 college football season had its winners (Florida, Boise State and Division IAA schools) and losers (Duke, FIU and non-BCS bowl games). What are some of the topics and questions heading into the 2007 season? Let’s take a look.

Repeat for Florida? The basketball team did it, why not the football team? Blame the SEC schedule and lack of a playoff system for putting a damper on the Gators’ chances for a repeat. Florida will be a great team, but not strong enough to escape playing Tennessee, Auburn, LSU, Georgia and Florida State undefeated. If the Gators do make it through that schedule they still have to win the SEC Championship game. Repeat? Doubtful.

Which teams will play in the BCS National Championship Game? This question should be who will be playing USC in the title game? USC is looking like last year’s Ohio State. The only difference is that the men of Troy appear to be more talented and deeper on both sides of the ball. The possible stumbling blocks for the Trojans would be their schedule or their egos. The teams that have the inside track at meeting up with USC in New Orleans are: Florida (even with their schedule), the winner of the Oklahoma/Texas game and West Virginia. I’m giving the early edge to West Virginia because they play in the Big Least, err, I mean Big East.

IAA Domination is what appeared to happen at the start of the 2006 season. Four Division IAA schools defeated the big boys to start last season, including Montana State’s stunning 19-10 victory over Colorado.

At least one Division IAA team won in each of the first four weeks. Northern Iowa almost made it five weeks until Iowa State outscored them by eight in the fourth quarter for a 28-27 victory. From 2003-2005 IAA teams combined for 18 wins against Division I teams. Last year the small guys were able to win seven games. With more Division I schools scheduling their diminutive brethren more shockers are sure to follow.

The longest winning streak in Division I belongs to Boise State at 13 games. The Broncos were also the only undefeated team in 2006. Duke (0-12) and Florida International (0-12) were the only teams not to win a game last season. Duke has lost 22 consecutive games against Division I schools.

Another BCS surprise from Boise State is not likely to happen again this year. Utah was the first non-BCS school to shock the big boys when they earned a spot in the 2005 Fiesta Bowl and spanked Pittsburgh 35-7. However the Utes were 7-5 the following year. Boise State does have a chance to return to the BCS party, but losing Jared Zabransky and playing at Washington, Fresno State and Hawaii might be too much to overcome. Not to mention all of the hype they will have to contend with after last season’s dramatic OT victory over Oklahoma.
