The final pieces of the BCS puzzle are coming together. Will the picture of this puzzle turn out to be a masterpiece or a jumbled mess? Since the BCS was created in 1998 there have only been three seasons (1999, 2002 and 2005) in which there was little controversy over the teams playing in the championship. Let's take a look at the five seasons in which utter bedlam has taken place.
The 1999 Fiesta Bowl ('98 season) pitted Tennessee (12-0) against Florida State (11-1). Both teams were ranked first and second in the AP poll, so where's the controversy? That would come from the teams ranked three through six. Like the Seminoles; Ohio State, Kansas State, Arizona and UCLA only had one loss each. Tennessee defeated Florida State 23-16.
No. 1 Oklahoma played No. 3 Florida State in the 2001 Orange Bowl. Again, Florida State came into the championship game with one loss. This time the Seminoles kept No. 2 Miami (11-1) from playing for the title. No. 4 Washington and No. 5 Oregon State also had one loss and didn’t have a chance to play for the title. Oklahoma defeated Florida State 13-2.
The 2002 Rose Bowl (espn.go.com/ncf/bowls01/rose.html) was possibly the biggest black eye to the BCS system when No. 1 Miami faced No. 4 Nebraska. The Cornhuskers limped into the game after losing their regular season finale to Colorado 36-62.
No. 2 Oregon and No. 3 Colorado got to watch Miami smoke Nebraska 37-14.
USC fans won't forget the 2004 Sugar Bowl between No. 2 LSU and No. 3 Oklahoma. The Trojans were No. 1 in the AP poll, yet they were shafted by the BCS system. Each of the three teams had one loss, but LSU and Oklahoma received more computer points. LSU defeated Oklahoma 21-14 and split the championship with USC.
Finally the 2005 Orange Bowl was yet another example of why college football still has a mythical champion. USC, Oklahoma, Auburn, Utah and Boise State finished the regular season undefeated, but only two were able to play for the championship. USC and Oklahoma got the honor to play while Auburn was the major player left out. USC defeated Oklahoma 55-19 to win the title. Auburn and Utah also finished the season undefeated.
For this year's puzzle to be completed to the liking of the BCS organizers USC needs to defeat UCLA. However, even if USC wins, Michigan and Wisconsin will also have one loss. If Florida, Louisville and Rutgers win on Saturday six teams will finish the season with one loss. If USC and Florida both lose on Saturday why shouldn’t Wisconsin get a chance to play Ohio State instead of Michigan? Then there’s undefeated Boise State. Kind of messes up the picture a little bit doesn’t it?
I’m hoping that the mayhem continues until they finally establish a playoff system.
USC at UCLA (plus 13.5)
The View
UCLA leads the PAC 10 in rushing defense, sacks (37) and tackles for loss (90). A major weakness for the Bruins is pass defense. USC hopes to exploit that weakness with Dwayne Jarrett and Steve Smith. Jarrett and Smith are combining for over ten receptions and 156 yards a game. USC has won seven straight against UCLA. Make that eight.
USC- 33, UCLA- 21
Arkansas at Florida (minus 3)
The View
Florida defeated Arkansas in the SEC Championship game in 1995 and leads the series 5-1.
If Florida can’t stop Darren McFadden, Felix Jones and the wildcat formation the Gators can forget about playing in Glendale. When Florida loses they can forget about playing in any BCS game.
Arkansas- 27, Florida- 17
Army at Navy (minus 20.5)
The View
Army is bad, really bad. The Black Knights are ranked 119th out 119 schools with a turnover margin of minus 1.55. Army is ranked 100th or worse in seven statistical categories. Navy runs away with the Commander in Chief Trophy.
Navy- 42, Army- 14

The College View 2006 WK 13
Yesterday was a day to be thankful. I reflected on those things that I was thankful for: my wife, family, friends and of course college football. I couldn’t help but smile when thinking about Ohio State and the spectacular way in which the regular season ended.
While relaxing on the couch, stuffed with turkey, I started thinking about Arkansas, Florida, Michigan, Notre Dame and USC. All of those teams should be thankful for the BCS system and that they have a shot at playing Ohio State in the title game. Will these teams, and their fans, still be grateful about the BCS system if their team wins out and is not playing in Glendale?
Then my mind wandered to Boise State. If the Broncos defeat Nevada Saturday they will be undefeated and won’t have a chance to play Ohio State.
Friday, Arkansas will have their chance to sway votes their direction when the play LSU. Saturday will be Florida’s, Notre Dame’s and USC’s opportunity to present their arguments. I do prefer a playoff, but I am thankful that Ohio State will play the No. 2 ranked team. Whichever team that turns out to be.
No. 9 LSU at No. 5 Arkansas (pick)
The History
LSU has won four out of the last five games against Arkansas. The Razorbacks have played 12 of their 13 home games against the Tigers in Little Rock. 1992 was the only year they played in Fayetteville because of construction in Little Rock. LSU leads the series 30-17-2.
The View
Arkansas (10-1) and Florida are getting all of the attention in the SEC because of their BCS Championship aspirations. If Arkansas defeats LSU and Florida, combined with a USC loss, the Hogs could be headed to the desert.
Don’t forget about LSU (9-2). By the numbers the Tigers own the SEC. LSU leads the nation in total defense. They are ranked first in the SEC in scoring and pass defense, sacks (37), scoring offense and total offense. JaMarcus Russell and his talented trio of receivers will pull off the “upset”.
LSU- 21, Arkansas- 20
No. 4 Florida at Florida State (plus 9.5)
The History
Bobby Bowden is 16-2-1 against Florida. Before Bowden arrived at Florida State in 1976 the Seminoles were 2-15-1 against the Gators.
The View
This game showcases two of the nation’s stingiest defenses. Florida (10-1) is giving up less than 72 yards rushing and are holding opponents to less than 12 points each game. Florida State (6-5) leads the nation with 95 tackles for loss.
Florida wants to impress pollsters by blowing out Florida State. Urban Meyers’ Gators will have to settle for a closer than expected victory.
Florida- 17, Florida State- 14
No. 6 Notre Dame at No. 3 USC (minus 7.5)
The Players
The revolving door in USC's backfield continues. C.J. Gable is now the Trojans' running back after Chauncey Washington sprained his knee last week in the victory over Cal. Wide receivers Steve Smith and Dwayne Jarrett have combined for 103 receptions, 1,484 yards and 15 touchdowns. John David Booty has thrown for 2,417 yards and 22 touchdowns this season.
Brady Quinn is responsible for 3,004 of Notre Dame's 3,011 passing yards this season. Quinn has also thrown for 32 touchdowns. Jeff Samardzija and Rhema McKnight have accounted for 1,655 of the receiving yards and 75 % of Quinn's touchdown passes.
The View
USC (9-1) defeated Notre Dame (10-1) in last year’s 34-31 thriller in South Bend. Pete Carroll has won four in a row against the Irish and is looking to tie USC’s record of five straight.
More than that is on the line for the Trojans. USC will play Ohio State in the title game if the Trojans win out. Much will be asked of freshman tailback C.J. Gable if John David Booty can’t get the ball to receivers Steve Smith and Dwayne Jarrett.
For Notre Dame to play the Buckeyes they need to win big on Saturday, have Arkansas lose ugly to LSU and then defeat Florida. If all of that comes to fruition, Notre Dame will still have to use all of its pull surpass Michigan in the human polls.
USC- 36, Notre Dame- 20
No. 12 Boise State at Nevada (plus 2.5)
The Players
Boise State running back Ian Johnson will play this week. Quarterback Jared Zabransky beats defenses with his arm and his legs. Linebacker Korey Hall has a team best six interceptions and 98 tackles.
Nevada's J.J. Milan leads the WAC with 9.5 sacks and is second in the conference with 12.5 tackles for loss. DeAngelo Wilson is ranked 6th in the country with a punt return average of 15.21. Tailback Robert Hubbard has rushed for 914 yards this season.
The View
Why should you watch this game? Two reasons, Boise State (11-0) has Ian Johnson and Nevada (8-3) has the “pistol” formation. Both of which are fun to watch.
The Broncos will become the second non-BCS conference school (Utah 2004) to play in a BCS bowl game if they win. Boise State has won six straight games against Nevada by an average score of 51-12.

The College View 2006 WK 12
In 1996 Hillary Rodham Clinton wrote a book titled It Takes a Village. The title was taken from an African proverb with the premise that a village, town or city is responsible for raising productive citizens. I was raised in Columbus in the 70s, 80s and 90s. During that time my village taught me to hate the team Up North.
I remember watching my first Game at the age of three. I distinctly remember sitting with my dad in my grandpa’s 1960s styled basement. My grandpa, parked in a brown leather La-Z-Boy and sipping on a glass of Toburg, said “Matthew, that team in blue and yellow, with the ugly helmets, is the team you hate.” I asked him “why?” and he replied “Because Woody and God say so.
That day the Buckeyes won 18-15 in Ann Arbor. Just as important, I learned that Bo, M*ch*gan and Wolverines were four letter words.
It takes a village.
I will never forget March 13, 1987. I was a fourth grade student at Indianola Alternative Elementary School and Woody Hayes was to be the featured speaker at our school assembly. My heart sank when the principal came across the P.A. to announce that Woody Hayes would not be able to attend the assembly that day. Woody Hayes passed away the night of the twelfth. I will always remember the sadness in my principal's voice as he spoke those words.
He created a village.
Unfortunately as I went through middle school, high school and college my hatred for M*ch*gan was slowly replaced with fear. The dark days of Cooper were upon the land of Scarlet and Gray and The Game turned into The Shame.
Cooper tried to downplay the importance of The Game and the tradition behind it. The players and fans picked up on his apathy and the Buckeyes continually lost to teams with less talent from the land of stench.
The Buckeyes were talented during Cooper’s tenure as coach, but they could not beat that team. 2-10-1 speaks for itself. An entire generation grew up watching the Buckeyes lose The Game to inferior teams from Up North. Cooper could not win The Game. Cooper did not understand The Game.
He lost a village.
Jim Tressel understands and respects the importance of the third Saturday of November. Jim Tressel recruits players that respect the importance as well. 82 players on this year’s team hail from the great state of O-H-I-O. In 1995, one of Cooper’s finest teams, only 67 players were from our state. Jim Tressel has 82 players in his locker room that grew up watching The Game with their fathers, grandfathers and friends feeding the seeds of their undeniable hatred for that team.
Jim Tressel is on the cusp of doing something that no other Ohio State head coach has ever done. By winning Saturday Jim Tressel will be the first coach to win five of his first six Games. Unlike his predecessor, Jim Tressel understands the importance of The Game. Not just for the Ohio State football program, but for the entire state of Ohio and the multitude of Ohio State fans.
At his weekly press conference Tressel said “…it's just a tremendous feeling to be a part of something that so many people are excited about and so many people count it special, I don't know who else gets to sit at home with their dad and watch that game, I got an email from a guy that he's flying to Las Vegas to watch the game with his son…he just wants to be with his son and I can relate to that and it's special.”
Jim Tressel understands The Game.
He believes in the village.

The College View 2006 WK 11
Before 2004’s defeat, the last time top ranked Ohio State (10-0) lost to Northwestern (3-7) in Evanston was 1958. That loss snapped Ohio State’s 15 game winning streak in Ryan Stadium. At 3:30 the 23 point favorite Buckeyes look to add to their 25-6-1 record in Evanston.
The History
Ohio State leads the series 56-14-1 and is 9-1 against the Wildcats in the last ten games. Last year the Buckeyes won 48-7.
The Players
James Laurinaitis intercepted his fifth pass against Illinois. He is now one interception behind Chris Spielman for the Ohio State single season record by a linebacker. Pittman should go over the 1,000 yard mark this week. Ted Ginn needs two punt return touchdowns to tie the NCAA record. He might be down to his last three games to accomplish that feat.
Tyrell Sutton is Northwestern’s best player on offense. Last week he scorched Iowa for 168 yards rushing and a touchdown. C.J. Bacher has thrown for 667 yards and four touchdowns as the Wildcats’ starting quarterback in the past three games. Senior wide receiver Shaun Herbert leads the team in receptions and receiving yards. Corey Wootton leads the team with four sacks and 8.5 tackles for loss.
The Stats
Averaging under 17 yards a return the Buckeyes are ranked tenth in the Big Ten and 112th in the NCAA in kickoff returns. Maybe they aren’t getting enough practice because opponents are unable to score. The defense is allowing a nation’s best 7.6 points per game. Despite the poor game last week, Ohio State is still ranked first in the Big Ten in scoring offense, passing efficiency, sacks allowed, tackles for loss and sacks allowed.
Northwestern is last in the Big Ten in the following categories: passing offense, passing efficiency, scoring and total offense. The Wildcats are 105th in tackles for loss and have a negative turnover margin.
The View
Northwestern shocked Iowa last week winning 21-7. The Wildcats would like to cap a season of losses and sorrow with an upset victory over No. 1 Ohio State. If the Buckeyes go back to “Tressel ball” Northwestern might have a chance.
Ohio State- 33, Northwestern- 13
No. 2 Michigan at Indiana (plus 19)
The History
25 of the first 27 games played between Michigan (10-0) and Indiana (5-5) were in Ann Arbor. Michigan is 15-2 in Bloomington and leads the series 40-8.
The Players
Mike Hart has rushed for 1,281 yards and ten touchdowns this season. Chad Henne has 16 touchdown passes. Mario Manningham will play in his second game since having knee surgery. LaMarr Woodley leads the Big Ten with 11 sacks.
Quarterback Kellen Lewis leads Indiana with 333 rushing yards. Receiver James Hardy has caught 9 touchdown passes. Running back Marcus Thigpen leads the Big Ten with 653 yards and 3 touchdowns on kickoff returns.
The View
Can the Hoosiers be the second team from the state of Indiana to scare the Wolverines? No. Michigan is 15-2 playing in Bloomington and leads the series 40-8.
Michigan- 31, Indiana- 10
No. 13 Tennessee at No. 11 Arkansas (minus 6)
The History
Arkansas (8-1) defeated Tennessee (7-2) the first time the schools met in 1992. The Volunteers lead the series 9-2 and are 4-1 when playing the Razorbacks on the road.
The View
Time for change isn't limited to the political scene this week. Tennessee (7-2) and Arkansas (8-1) will also have change in their backfields Saturday. Tennessee's Erik Ainge might miss another game because of his bum ankle. Starting tailback Arian Foster, LaMarcus Coker's replacement, was arrested in a bar fight Saturday forcing freshman Montario Hardesty to start against the Razorbacks.
Last week, Arkansas quarterback Mitch Mustain was replaced by Casey Dick after Mustain threw an interception in the first series against South Carolina. Arkansas running back Darren McFadden may miss time this week with a leg injury. The political landscape may have changed, but Arkansas' winning ways won't.
Arkansas- 20, Tennessee- 17
No. 14 Boise State at San Jose State (plus 14)
The Players
Quarterback Jared Zabransky beats defenses with his arm and his legs. Linebacker Korey Hall has a team best six interceptions and 85 tackles.
Quarterback Adam Tafralis likes to throw the ball to James Jones and John Broussard. Averaging 12.5 tackles a game linebacker Matt Castelo is second to Illinois' J Leman.
The Stats
Boise State is second in the country averaging 40 points a game. The Broncos lead the WAC in rushing defense, pass efficiency defense, scoring and total defense. For the season Boise State has gained 2,105 yards rushing.
San Jose State has the WAC's best pass defense and is second to Boise State in rushing offense (214 ypg) and scoring defense.
The View
You may want to stay up for the 10:15 game between the Broncos (9-0) and the Spartans (6-2) to watch two outstanding running backs. Yonus Davis has racked up 476 yards in his last three games for San Jose State and Boise State’s Ian Johnson leads the nation in scoring.
Boise State is 5-0 against San Jose State and has outscored the Spartans 272-98 in those games. Ian Johnson will score at least twice as Boise State marches on toward a January bowl game.
Boise State- 45, San Jose State- 30
No. 21 Oregon @ No. 7 USC (minus 7.5)
The History
USC (7-1) beat Oregon (7-2) 45-13 last year in Eugene. The Trojans are 21-4-1 at home against the Ducks and lead the series 35-14-2. Both teams have won five of the last ten games.
The Stats
Oregon averages 456 yards of offense and scores 36 points a game. The Ducks lead the PAC 10 in rushing offense, scoring offense, sacks allowed and pass defense.
The Trojans are holding opponents to 90 rushing yards a game. USC is best in the conference in total and scoring defense.
The View
This game pits Oregon’s PAC 10 leading offense against USC’s conference best defense. The Ducks average over 200 yards rushing and the Trojans are only allowing opponents to gain 90 yards on the ground. Something has to give. I don’t see Southern Cal losing back-to-back games for the first time since 2001.
USC- 35, Oregon- 30
South Carolina at No. 6 Florida (minus 13.5)
The History
Florida (8-1) leads the series 18-3-2. South Carolina (5-4) is 0-11-1 against Florida in the state of Florida.
The Stats
The Gamecocks have recorded 62 tackles for loss, only Tennessee has more in the SEC. South Carolina is ranked 10th in scoring offense, punt returns and kickoff returns.
Florida has the best rush defense in the SEC. The Gators only trail LSU in pass efficiency defense, sacks and total defense.
The View
Last Year Steve Spurrier coached the Gamecocks to their first victory over the Gators since 1939. Saturday, Spurrier will try to become the first South Carolina coach to win in Gainesville. Florida has already won the SEC East and could be caught looking ahead at the BCS rankings. Then again, Urban Meyer definitely won’t look past being 0-2 against Steve Spurrier.
Florida- 23, South Carolina- 14
Texas Tech @ No. 17 Oklahoma (minus 9)
The History
Oklahoma (7-2) lost to Texas Tech (6-4) 21-23 on a disputed touchdown in Lubbock last year. The Sooners lead the series 8-3 and are 5-1 in Norman.
The Players
By averaging 345 yards a game Graham Harrell is ranked third in the nation and first in the Big 12 in total offense. Robert Johnson, Joel Filani and Shannon Woods are first, second and third in the Big 12 in receptions per game. Woods has gained 1,435 yards this year.
Last week Patrick Allen ran for 173 yards against Texas A&M. That was Allen's third straight game of 100 plus yards. Quarterback Paul Thompson has thrown for over 1,600 yards this season. However, the Aggies held him to only 45 yards. Linebacker Rufus Alexander leads the defense with 75 tackles.
The View
This match-up features the Big 12’s top offense (Texas Tech) going up against the conference’s best defense (Oklahoma). The Sooners’ Patrick Allen will rush for his fourth straight 100 yard game as Oklahoma (7-2) gets revenge for last year’s controversial 21-23 loss to Texas Tech (6-4) in Lubbock.
Oklahoma- 33, Texas Tech- 31

Illinois has had four different coaches since the last time the Illini defeated Ohio State at Memorial Stadium in 1991. Ohio State is 31-12 against Illinois in Champaign. Kickoff for the game between the No. 1 ranked Buckeyes (9-0) and the Fighting Illini (2-7) is at 3:30.

The Players
Isiah “Juice” Williams is Illinois' most exciting player. The freshman quarterback has amassed over 1,600 yards and has nine touchdown passes. Senior Pierre Thomas splits time with sophomore Rashard Mendenhall at tailback. Kyle Hudson leads the team with 25 receptions.
Linebacker J Leman is arguably the best player on the team. Leman leads the Big Ten with 98 tackles and is third in tackles for loss. Defensive lineman Derek Walker leads the team with 4.5 sacks.
Ted Ginn, Anthony Gonzalez and Brian Robiskie have combined for 70 percent of Ohio State's receiving yards and 65 percent of the team's receptions. Even though Quinn Pitcock did not play against Indiana he is still ranked second in the Big Ten with seven sacks. With his fourth interception last week Malcolm Jenkins tied James Laurinaitis for the team lead. Vernon Gholston leads the team with 10.5 tackles for loss.
The Stats
The Illini's rushing offense is averaging just under 182 yards a game and the defense is ranked third in the Big Ten against the pass. However, Illinois is last in the Big Ten in sacks allowed (25) and turnover margin (-1.22). The offense is tenth in the conference in passing and scoring offense.
In nine games Ohio State has only allowed two opponents to score in double digits. The Buckeyes are ranked first in the Big Ten in scoring offense (323 points), scoring defense (66 points), tackles for loss (72), sacks allowed (9) and passing efficiency (173.27). Ohio State is ranked seventh in the nation in turnover margin (+1.22) and sacks (30).
The View
Juice Williams may be exciting to watch and have a cannon for an arm, but he makes too many mistakes. Juice has thrown eight interceptions this year and is ranked 94th in passing efficiency. The Buckeyes’ defense is going to put the squeeze on Williams and make him feel how juice is made.
At the beginning of Ron Zook’s first season at Illinois (2005) he told his players they would be contenders in the Big Ten in two years. Under Zook’s command the Illini are currently 1-12 against Big Ten schools. His first win was in late September against Michigan State after losing his first nine conference games.
Ohio State- 38, Illinois- 9

The Stats
This year Oklahoma is all about defense. The Sooners lead the Big 12 in pass efficiency, scoring and total defense. However, Oklahoma's defense is ranked 101st in sacks.
Texas A&M's strength is the running game. The Aggies have racked up 1,923 yards on the ground this season. A&M is averaging just under 423 yards of offense and are ranked first in the country in kickoff returns.
The View
This should be a great game. Both teams are still playing for possible New Year’s Day bowl games. Texas A&M leans on its running attack to win games while Oklahoma has relied on its defense to shut down the opposition. The triple threat of Goodson, Lane and McGee should make the Aggies 9-1 against the Sooners in the state of Texas.
Texas A&M- 30, Oklahoma- 28
Oklahoma State at No. 4 Texas (minus 17)
Kickoff: 7:00

Texas has only allowed ten sacks this season. The Longhorns are averaging just under 40 points a game. The defense is only giving up 41 yards and 16 points a contest.
The View
Oklahoma State is coming off of a huge 41-29 victory over Nebraska last week. Texas Tech might have shown that Texas’ weakness is pass defense. Oklahoma State might want to try that theory this week. However, Texas is going to prove Newton’s law of gravity correct by showing the Cowboys that what they put up, must come down in the Longhorns’ hands.

The College View 2006 Week 9
What do former Ohio State coaches Francis Schmidt, Wesley Fesler and John Cooper have in common? They are the only Ohio State coaches to lose to Minnesota in Columbus. I’m sure Jim Tressel will do everything in his power not to join that list Saturday. You can watch No. 1 Ohio State (8-0) play 27.5 point underdog, Minnesota (3-5), on ABC at 3:30.
The History
1921 was the first time Ohio State and played (and defeated) Minnesota. Ohio State leads the series 38-7. The Buckeyes are 9-1in the last ten contests. The lone loss was at the ’Shoe in 2000 (17-29). Before that loss the last time Minnesota won in Columbus was 1949.

The View
School officials are trying to disassociate this game with the title “The World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party”. In May the SEC asked television networks to stop referring to the game as “The World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party” because officials fear people will associate the schools with drinking. Even if it is no longer referred to as “The World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party”, I’m sure Gator and Bulldog fans will still drink in celebration, or to drown their sorrows, at “The World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party”.

The College View 2006 Week 8
In the last 55 years Indiana has only defeated Ohio State twice in Columbus, 1951 and 1987. I was in attendance for the 1987 game. I sat in B-deck as a dumbfounded 11 year old watching the Hoosiers wax the Buckeyes 31-10 in what would be Earl Bruce's last season as Ohio State's head coach. Saturday at noon will be Indiana's next opportunity to knock off 31.5 point favorite Ohio State in the Horseshoe. If you don't have ESPNU, you won't be able to watch the game in the comforts of your home.
The History
Ohio State has won the last twelve games against Indiana. This will be the 82nd game in this series. Ohio State is 64-12-5 versus Indiana. Since the 1951 loss, the Buckeyes are 44-2-2 against the Hoosiers.
The Players
With his punt return for a touchdown, Ted Ginn is again in the national spotlight. Last year Ginn returned a punt against Indiana only to have it called back due to an unnecessary block in the back penalty. Had that touchdown counted, Ginn would only be one behind the all-time NCAA record of eight. Brian Robiskie, coming off of a career game against Michigan State, is becoming Troy Smith's third target behind Gonzalez and Ginn. Quinn Pitcock is eighth in the country with 7 sacks, James Laurinaitis leads the Big Ten with four interceptions and Vernon Gholston has nine tackles for loss.
Indiana's quarterback, Kellen Lewis, threw for three touchdowns and 255 yards last week against Iowa. Lewis also ran for another touchdown and was named the Big Ten‘s Offensive Player of the Week. Receiver James Hardy was Lewis' go-to receiver catching all three touchdowns against Iowa. Sophomore Marcus Thigpen leads the nation in kick return yards and has returned three for touchdowns this year. Cornerback Tracy Porter has three interceptions,, senior defensive end Kenny Kendal has 2.5 sacks, and safety Will Myers leads the team with 46 tackles.
The Stats
Ohio State's defense leads the Big Ten in the following statistical categories: scoring defense (9 ppg), turnover margin (plus 1.43), sacks (24), tackles for loss (58) and interceptions (13). The Buckeyes' offense is scoring just under 34 points a game and is gaining 235 yards passing. However, the rushing game is ranked 9th in the Big Ten.
As proficient as Ohio State has been in the offensive and defensive categories, Indiana has been deficient. The Hoosiers rank last in the conference in rushing (109 ypg) and are tenth in total offense. Indiana's offensive line is allowing at least two sacks a game and Winslow ranks 9th in the league for passing efficiency.
As bad as the offense has been, the defense is even worse. Nationally the Hoosiers are 106th in pass efficiency defense, 102nd against the run, 97th in total defense and scoring defense and 94th in sacks.
The View
I’m happy that Terry Hoeppner was able to overcome his recent health issues and coach his team in the upset victory over Iowa last week. Kudos. Unfortunately for Hoeppner, the Buckeyes are an obstacle that his team will not be able to conquer. To pad the stats, Ohio State’s running game will gain over 180 yards and Troy Smith will again put up Heisman numbers and highlights. The only question remaining is how many points will Tressel allow his team to hang on Hoeppner’s Hoosiers?

Last year Nebraska shocked the college football world with a stunning victory over Michigan in the Alamo Bowl. The Cornhuskers could do it again by defeating Texas at home. Don’t get too excited my corn loving friends, the Longhorns’ defense won’t allow that to happen.

Louisville is ranked second in total offense and is averaging over 40 points a game. The defense has recorded 21 sacks.
The View
Perry Patterson wasn’t punished for giving the fans in Morgantown an “obscene gesture” during the Orange’s 41-17 loss last week. Maybe the punishment is that he’ll be playing against Louisville and their sack hungry defense. Syracuse is always dangerous at home, but this Orange team has already been crushed.

The College View 2006 Week 7
No. 1 Ohio State is a 15 point favorite against Michigan State this Saturday. You can watch the 3:30 game on ABC.
The History
Ohio State has won the last three games against Michigan State by a combined score of 100-58. In 1912, Michigan State won the first game played in this series. Ohio State leads the all-time series 24-12.
The Players
Troy Smith continues to impress everyone with his passing ability. Last week Smith completed 17 of 20 pass attempts to go along with three touchdowns. Although Ted Ginn had a big game last week look for Anthony Gonzalez, Roy Hall, and Ray Small to get more touches against the Spartans. Senior defensive tackle Joel Penton will replace the injured David Patterson on Saturday.
Quarterback Drew Stanton is averaging 248 yards of total offense a game this season. Half back Jehuu Caulcrick is taking the majority of the hand-offs due to Javon Ringer’s season ending knee injury. Coach John L. Smith has suspended two tight ends for Saturday’s game and go-to wide receiver Matt Trannon might be sidelined for the Ohio State game because of injury. Free safety Otis Wiley leads the team in tackles and defensive tackle Clifton Wiley has three sacks.
The Stats
Each game Ohio State is averaging 235 yards passing, 151 yards rushing and scoring just under 33 points. The defense is allowing opponents to rush for 118 yards and throw for 182 yards. However, the Buckeyes lead the country in points allowed (9.33) and rank third in the country in turnover margin (plus 1.67). Also, in six games the defense has collected 20 sacks.
Michigan State’s defense is unlike Ohio State’s. The Spartans are allowing their opponents over 334 yards of total offense and 25 points a game. The defense ranks 104th in sacks (7) and 108th in tackles for loss. The offense is racking up 413 yards and scoring 31 points a contest.
The View
This was a game that had many Buckeye fans worried at the beginning of the season. Today some of those worries have been subsided because of the injuries to Javon Ringer and Matt Trannon. The fact that Michigan State is in meltdown mode relieves those fears even further. The Spartans have lost their last three games since the second half debacle against Notre Dame. John L. Smith, as a head coach, has not lost four straight games since his last year at Utah State in 1997.
The weather could have a bigger influence on the outcome of this game than the Spartans. Can Air Troy still fly the friendly skies in cold weather?

No. 4 Michigan at Penn State
Kickoff: 8:00
TV: ABC
The History
The first game between Michigan (6-0) and Penn State (4-2) was in 1993. Michigan won 21-13. Michigan leads the series 8-3. Penn State won three straight games between 1994 and 1996. Lloyd Carr is 7-2 against Joe Paterno.
The Players
Michael Hart, Chad Henne, and Steve Breaston are the big names for Michigan's offense. Wide receiver Adrian Arrington will have to step up for the injured Mario Manningham, the same Manningham that leads the team in receiving yards (527 yards) and touchdowns (9).
Penn State's offense relies on the play of running back Tony Hunt. With the inconsistent play of Anthony Morelli wide receivers Deon Butler, Jordan Norwood, and Derrick Williams are being under utilized.
The Stats
Michigan has the best rush defense in the country and is ranked tenth in total defense. The Wolverines are plus 1.33 in turnover margin and the offense is scoring just over 33 points a game.
Penn State also has a stingy rush defense allowing under 80 yards a game. The Nittany Lions are averaging three sacks a game. Penn State's offense is gaining at least 190 rushing yards each week.
The View
Last year Michigan played spoiler to Penn State's undefeated season by defeating the Nittany Lions on the last play of the game in Ann Arbor. This year Penn State is looking to return the favor in front of 100,000 plus fans wearing white. To do so, Tony Hunt will have to have a career day against the strength of the Wolverine defense.

No. 2 Florida at No. 11 Auburn
Kickoff: 7:45
TV: ESPN
The History
Saturday will be the 81st time Florida (6-0) and Auburn (5-1) have played each other. Auburn leads the series 40-38-2. The series resumes after going on a three year hiatus starting in 2003. 2003 was the first time since 1943 (WWII) that the teams didn't play each other. Florida won the game in 2002 and holds a 10-3 edge since 1990.
The Players
Heisman hopeful Chris Leak and freshman sensation Tim Tebow split time behind center for the Gators. Last week Tebow showed that he can do more than just run the ball. Kestahn Moore replaces the injured DeShawn Wynn at tailback. Dallas Baker is the leading receiver and Tony Joiner leads the defense in tackles.
Kenny Irons has been the one bright spot for Auburn's offense. Quarterback Brandon Cox (if healthy) likes to throw the ball to Courtney Taylor and Rodgeriqus Smith. Defensive linemen Sen'Derrick Marks, Marquies Gunn, and Quentin Groves have combined for 9.5 sacks.
The Stats
Florida's offense has been getting all of the press, but the defense has been putting up the numbers. The Gators rank second in scoring defense (9.5 ppg), fourth in rush defense, and fifth in pass efficiency defense.
Auburn has a talented defense as well. The Tigers are ranked sixth in scoring defense, 17th in pass defense, and 22nd in total defense.
The View
The game at Auburn is Florida's second away game this season. Tennessee was the first away game and the Gators barely won 21-20. Auburn is coming off of an embarrassing home loss to Arkansas last week. 1999 was the last time the Tigers lost back-to-back home games. The first team Auburn lost to in 1999 was Mississippi State. The second loss was to, you guessed it, Florida.

Ohio at Illinois

The Players
Last week's performance against Western Michigan earned three Bobcats MAC East Player of the Week honors. Running back Kalvin McRae won the offensive award, linebacker Tyler Russ won the defensive award, and Chris Garrett won the special team award.
Illinois' offense is being directed by freshman Isiah “Juice” Williams. Halfback Pierre Thomas is gaining 79 yards a game and linebacker J Leman leads the team in tackles.
The Stats

Illinois is ranked 49th in total offense, 22nd rushing, 81st passing, and 85th in scoring offense (20.83 ppg).
The View
The Bobcats are hard to figure out this year. They defeat upper-tier MAC teams Northern Illinois and Western Michigan, but they lose to Bowling Green. Illinois is a lower-tier team and wears orange and white. The same colors that have given the green and white trouble this year. Juice Williams may have a break-out game against the Bobcats.

Florida- 17, Auburn- 14
Ohio at Illinois
Kickoff: 7:00
TV: ESPN 360
The History
This will be the fifth time Ohio (3-3) and Illinois (2-4) have played each other. The series is tied 2-2. Ohio won the first game 6-0 in 1935. Illinois won the last game, played in 1950, 28-2.
The Stats
Ohio's offense is ranked 110th in total offense, 95th rushing, 93rd passing, and is 91st in scoring offense (18.83 ppg).
Illinois- 24, Ohio- 17

The College View 2006 Week 6
This is only the fourth meeting between Ohio State (5-0) and Bowling Green (3-2). Ohio State leads the series 3-0. Surprisingly, the first game between these schools was in 1992. Even more surprising is that the Falcons made it a challenge for Ohio State in two of those three games. Losing 17-6 in '92 and 24-17 in 2003.
Bowling Green brings a run heavy offense into the Horseshoe Saturday at 3:30. The Falcons are averaging 208 yards rushing per game. This might be the first team (this season) to challenge the Ohio State defense by running the ball for four quarters. When BG does run, look for Freddie Barnes, Chris Bullock, or Dan Macon to be carrying the ball. Freddie Barnes is a do-it-all player who will line up at both halfback and quarterback. On average, Barnes has been gaining 120 yards of offense each game this season.
On the defensive side of the ball Bowling Green is 12th best in the country in passing yards allowed. The Falcons have been holding opposing offenses to only 147 yards passing each game. However, the Falcons have played Wisconsin, Buffalo, Florida International, Kent State, and Ohio this season. None of those teams have a pass oriented offense. On the downside, Bowling Green is allowing over 150 yards rushing and 30 points a game. Terrel White, Erique Dozier, and Diyral Briggs are players to watch on defense for the Falcons.
Ohio State looked very good last week at Iowa. Jim Tressel stresses that he prepares his team to play its best football at the end of the season. If that wasn't the best the Buckeyes can play, I'm scared for Michigan and Ohio State's bowl opponent.
The Buckeyes offense is averaging 154 yards rushing, 232 yards passing and is scoring over 32 points a contest. Antonio Pittman is consistently gaining over 110 yards each game and Chris “Beanie” Wells has been carrying the ball in short yardage situations. Look for both to have big games against Bowling Green.
The defense has given up 49 points...all season. The Laurinaitus lead defensive unit has 11 interceptions, 18 sacks, and 43 tackles for loss. The “Little Animal” already has 41 tackles, four interceptions, and two sacks this season. In preparation for next week's game against Javon Ringer, Jehuu Caulcrick and Michigan State; Bowling Green is the perfect team to give the defense a glorified practice against the run.
The View
Ohio State currently has a 12 game winning streak. After Saturday's game the streak will be at 13. The only question is whether the Buckeyes will continue their streak of covering the spread. That's right, conservative Jim Tressel has not only defeated the last 12 opponents, but he has also won each game by enough points to defeat Vegas as well. Has Tressel truly converted himself into Jimmy “The Spread”? I wouldn't be surprised to see Jimmy wearing a green leisure suit with a diamond encrusted dollar sign around his neck at the press conference after covering the 34.5 point spread.
Ohio State 48, Bowling Green- 10
No. 7 Texas at No. 14 Oklahoma (plus 4.5)
Kickoff: 3:30
TV: ABC
The play of Jamaal Charles, Selvin Young, and Limas Sweed have made things a little easier for freshman quarterback Colt McCoy. McCoy's pass efficiency rating of 172.97 is fourth best in the country. However, Texas' offense is still dependent on the offensive line and running backs Charles and Young. Even with the seven point game against Ohio State, Texas is averaging 42 points and 205 yards rushing.
Adrian Peterson has been the man for Oklahoma. The Heisman hopeful is averaging 195 yards of offense and two touchdowns every game. Quarterback Paul Thompson has been better than expected and sophomore Malcolm Kelly is Oklahoma's big play wide receiver.
The View
The first game between Oklahoma and Texas was in 1900 . The first game played in Dallas was in 1911. Starting in 1929, 76 straight games have been played between these proud programs in Dallas. Before last year's impressive victory, Texas had lost the previous five Red River Shootouts. Oklahoma is 5-2 against Texas with Bob Stoops as head coach. After Saturday's game the Sooners will be 5-3 and Peterson's Heisman trophy hopes may be tarnished.
Texas- 42, Oklahoma- 24
No. 9 LSU at No. 5 Florida (plus 1.5)
Kickoff: 3:30
TV: CBS
LSU has dominated every opponent this season except for Auburn. Coincidentally Auburn is the only team LSU has played that has a winning record. Playing against inferior opponents has helped the Tigers' defense, they rank first in pass defense, total defense, and pass efficiency defense. LSU ranks second in points allowed (7.4), and 11th in rushing yards allowed. Craig Steltz and Jonathan Zenon have combined for seven interceptions. Defensive ends Tyson Jackson and Chase Pittman have combined for ten of the team's 19 sacks.
The offense has benefited as well. Quarterback JaMarcus Russell has lead the offense to 38 points a contest and he is averaging 253 yards per game. Russell throws to a trio of talented receivers in Craig Davis, Dwayne Bowe, and Early Doucet.
Florida also has a stout defense. The Gators have only been allowing 50 yards rushing a game. Defensive back Reggie Nelson already has four interceptions this season and safety Tony Joiner leads the team with 32 tackles. Florida has been prone to giving up yards via the pass. Unfortunately for Florida, LSU likes to pass.
Chris Leak's arm and Tim Tebow's legs have helped the Gators' offense rack up 2,192 yards in five games. The question Saturday is how much time, if any, will running back DeShawn Wynn get? If Wynn is unable to play, look for sophomore Kestahn Moore to carry the load.
The View
The last time Urban Meyer lost as a head coach in the month of September was 2003. His Utah team lost 26-28 to Texas A&M. October has been much worse for Meyer. Last season two of Florida's three losses came in October. One of the losses in October was to LSU. History repeats itself as Florida loses its first game in October for the second straight season under Meyer.
LSU- 24, Florida- 20
No. 13 Tennessee at No. 10 Georgia (plus 2.5)
Kickoff: 7:45
TV: ESPN
The Bulldogs have not looked like the tenth best team in the country. Georgia’s pathetic performances against Mississippi and Colorado cost the team valuable poll positions. However, they did win and that’s all that should really matter. Joe Tereshinski is going to make his first start since suffering a high ankle sprain that caused him to miss the last four games. Will that jump start the Bulldogs’ offense against Tennessee and their ball-hawk defense?
Linebackers Marvin Mitchell and Jerod Mayo, with defensive back Jonathan Hefney, have been beasts on defense for the Volunteers. Mitchell has 52 tackles and Hefney has 42. Jerod Mayo has seven tackles for loss and four of them are sacks.
Tennessee is having a stellar season on offense. Future NFL wide receivers Robert Meachem and Jayson Swain are Erik Ainge's favorite targets. Swain and Meachem have caught ten of Ainge’s 12 touchdown
passes. LaMarcus Coker and Montario Hardesty have been splitting time at tailback.
The View
This game is the night cap for a great day of SEC football. Georgia has won five out of the last six games against Tennessee. The Volunteers lead the all-time series 11-9-2. Even though Tereshinski is back at quarterback for the Bulldogs and their defense is allowing less than a touchdown a game, it looks to be too much of a challenge for the secondary to stop Tennessee’s great wide receivers Jayson Swain and Robert Meachem.
Tennessee- 24, Georgia- 20
Western Michigan at Ohio (plus 3)
Kickoff: 7:00
Ohio has lost its last three games. In those three losses OU was not able to score in double digits. The Bobcats are now 1-1 in the MAC and need a win to stop the tail spin. To win this week, the offense needs to improve. Being ranked 114th in rushing (66 yards a game) and 113th in total offense is a big reason why the Bobcats continue to lose. Kalvin McRae can't gain yards if there isn't a hole to run through.
Western Michigan has won its last three games after losing the season opener against Indiana. The Mustangs are 2-0 in the MAC and have won 15 of the last 20 games against the Bobcats. Like OU, Western's offense isn't very impressive either. They are only passing for 124 yards a game (111th) and running for 131 yards. However, the offense has still been able to average over 27 points a game.
The View
The Mustangs’ defense is putting them in a position to win. Senior outside linebacker Ameer Ismail leads the team in sacks (5), tackles (34) and tackles for loss (8). As a team Western Michigan leads the nation with a plus two turnover margin. Their defense is third in the country averaging four sacks a game. Quarterback Austin Everson and the Ohio offense are in for a long night. Who will leave the game first, Everson or the fans?

The College View 2006 Week 5
Saturday's prime time special on ABC features No. 1 Ohio State traveling to Kinnick stadium to take on No. 13 Iowa. The last time Ohio State played in Iowa City, the Hawkeyes outscored them 33-7. Ohio State's last victory at Iowa was in 2000. However, the Buckeyes are 9-1 in the last ten contests against the Hawkeyes; including last year's 31-6 payback. Ohio State leads the overall series 43-14-3.
After last week's dismissal of Penn State the Buckeyes are now 4-0 on the season. Although the defense is giving up 115 yards rushing and 244 yards passing, opposing offenses are converting on third-down less than 21 percent of the time. That is best in the Big Ten and fourth best in the country.
The Silver-Bullets are still getting to the quarterback. They are tied for sixth in the country with four sacks a game and are averaging 9.5 tackles for loss (third). Pretty impressive for a unit that was supposed to be the weak link on the team.
Although the offense didn't have its finest hour last week, Antonio Pittman is still gaining over 112 yards rushing each game. Don't expect Troy Smith and the wide receivers to have back-to-back sub-par games.
Senior quarterback Drew Tate (954 total yards) leads the Hawkeye offense. Tate has receivers Dominique Douglas and Scott Chandler to throw the ball to and running back Albert Young to take the hand-offs. However, after 6 receptions last week against Illinois, Young is leading the team with 18 catches.
Iowa also has a stout defense. The Hawkeyes are getting three sacks a game and are only giving up 11 points per contest. Junior linebacker Mike Klinkenborg (41 tackles), junior defensive end Kenny Iwebema (5 tackles for loss), and sophomore defensive tackle Mitch King (7 sacks) are players to watch.
The View
Ohio State released some of the demons that haunted them from 2004’s loss to the Hawkeyes by defeating Iowa, in Columbus, last year. Saturday, Troy Smith and the defense, are going back into the belly of the beast to exorcise the rest of the demons from that game two years ago. It is said to get rid of evil spirits you should ring a bell. Like last year, Ohio State is going to ring Drew Tate's bell again and again and again. Demons be gone.
Jimmy “The Spread” Tressel has already used late interceptions for touchdowns and a last minute fifty yard field goal to cover the spread this season. It will be interesting to see how Jimmy covers the seven points this week.
Ohio State- 31, Iowa- 18
No. 15 Tennessee at Memphis (plus 13)
Kickoff: Noon
TV: ESPN
Playing away against an in-state opponent is always risky. Especially when you are big program like Tennessee. You have little to gain and everything to lose. Tennessee is 18-1 against Memphis. That's a good record, but every Volunteer fan will always remember the game that Peyton Manning lost to Memphis in 1996. The Tigers are looking for a repeat of their 21-17 home win ten years ago.
Tennessee- 21, Memphis- 17
Wisconsin at Indiana (plus 11)
Kickoff: Noon
TV: ESPN2
2002 was the last time Indiana and Wisconsin played each other. Indiana won 32-29. Surprisingly, the last time Wisconsin defeated the Hoosiers the year was 2000.
More important than this game is the recovery of Indiana coach, Terry Hoeppner. A remarkable story from a remarkable man. Win or lose, Hoeppner is always a winner. Too bad the Hoosiers lose the game.
Wisconsin- 24, Indiana- 17
Colorado at No. 25 Missouri (minus 14)
Kickoff: 2:00
TV: Fox Sports
Colorado won last year 41-12, but that was last year. This year the Buffaloes are winless. Yes, they came close to defeating Georgia last week, but Colorado has also lost to Montana State. Division IAA Montana State. Can Dan Hawkins, and Colorado, start off on the right foot in the Big 12 North and beat undefeated Missouri? No.
Missouri- 27, Colorado- 21
Purdue at No. 12 Notre Dame (minus 15)
Kickoff: 2:30
TV: NBC
Last year Notre Dame rolled over Purdue, 49-28. With that victory, Notre Dame has won six out of the last ten games against the Boilermakers. These schools have played each other every year since 1946. Notre Dame has a record of 39-21 versus Purdue in those 50 games.
The View
It's a shame Michigan State had a typical Spartan meltdown last week. I was looking forward to Charlie Weis' speech at the press conference after losing to Michigan State. Would he have resigned? We'll never know. Purdue's 4-0 record is a mirage and the Irish are ready to give them a taste of sand.
Notre Dame- 38, Purdue- 24
Alabama at No. 5 Florida (minus 13.5)
Kickoff: 3:30
TV: CBS
Alabama (3-1) is coming off of a heart breaking overtime loss to Arkansas last week. Back-up Place kicker Leigh Tiffin missed three make able field goals. One of the missed field goals was a 37-yarder in the first overtime that would have won the game. Tiffin also missed the extra-point after the Crimson Tide's touchdown in the second overtime. That miss allowed Arkansas to win the game 24-23.
Running back Ken Darby is also struggling this year. The senior has been banged up and is only rushing for 58 yards a game. To carry the slack of Darby, freshman quarterback John Parker Wilson has stepped up. Wilson has thrown for 961 yards and six touchdowns. Wide receivers Keith Brown and D.J. Hall have hauled in 653 of those yards and five of the six touchdowns.
Florida (4-0) is ranked fifth in the country. Other rankings that the Gators can chomp on are being ranked in the top ten in the following categories: passing offense, total offense, rushing defense, total defense, scoring defense, and net punting.
Senior quarterback Chris Leak is having a stellar season. Leak has already throw for 1,066 yards and an NCAA leading 12 touchdowns. However, some of the Gator faithful are wanting to see more of freshman Tim Tebow. Tebow is the team's second leading rusher and is definitely the quarterback of the future. DeShawn Wynn is Florida's leading rusher and Dallas Baker is the number one receiver.
The View
Alabama's 31-3 victory last year was the first time these two storied schools played each other in the regular season since 1999. Saturday will only be the 27th time these teams have played each other in the regular season. Alabama leads the series 18-8.
Florida will get its first home win against Alabama since 1991. The Swamp is going to get messy.

Kickoff: 3:30

The Hokies won last year 51-7. This will be the fourth time these schools have played each other. Virginia Tech leads the series 2-1. Georgia Tech won the first game of the series 6-3, back in 1990. That was the same season Georgia Tech split the national championship with Washington.
Virginia Tech- 16, Georgia Tech- 10
No. 14 Oregon at Arizona State (plus 2)
Kickoff: 3:30
TV: GamePlan
Oregon (4-0) had a bye week after “winning” the game against Oklahoma two weeks ago. Arizona State (3-1) is looking to bounce back from the 49-21 spanking California gave them last week. If you like scoring, high offensive numbers, and little defense, this is your game.
Both teams are ranked in the top 15 for total offense. The Sun Devils average 436 yards (14th in the country) of offense and the Ducks are averaging 471 yards (7th). Oregon has been scoring 37 points a game while ASU has been tallying 32.
The defensive side of the ball has been as pathetic as the offensive side has been prolific. Arizona State has been allowing 311 yards per game and Oregon is allowing 353. Both teams are also allowing their opponents to score close to 22 points each game.
The View
If you have GamePlan, sit back and enjoy the fireworks. The scoreboard may not be able to keep up with the yards and points that are going to be racked up.

No. 22 Boise State at Utah (minus 4)

Boise State is trying to play the BCS spoiler that Utah was in 2004. Utah is trying to spoil the Broncos dreams of a big payday. This is the third time that Boise State and Utah have played each other as Division I opponents. Boise State won both contests in 1998 and 1999. Since 2002 Boise State is 45-7. Four of the seven losses came last year. If you like rooting for the little guy, you want Jared Zabranksy and Boise State to finally go undefeated.
Boise State- 30, Utah- 27
Texas Tech at Texas A&M (minus 1)
Kickoff: 3:30
TV: ABC
Undefeated A&M will have its first true test of the season. Quarterback Steven McGee has thrown for 820 yards six touchdowns and zero interceptions. McGee has also rushed for 219 yards and one touchdown. Tailback Jorvorskie Lane is averaging 4.3 yards and carry and has ten rushing touchdowns.
Texas Tech avenged its embarrassing 12-3 loss, to TCU, with a 62-0 pounding of hapless Southeastern Louisiana. The Red Raiders offense should be more than the Aggies defense can handle.
Tech- 38, A&M- 31
Houston at Miami (minus 16)
Kickoff: 6:00
TV: ESPN
Not a good week to be a Houston Cougar. This is the first time since 1997 that Miami has started a season 1-2. Houston is undefeated this year, but Rice, Tulane, and Grambling are not the same quality as Miami. Even a Miami team that is unranked for the first time since 1999.
Miami- 42, Houston- 14
No. 3 USC at Washington State (plus 17)
Kickoff: 7:00
TV: TBS
USC leads the all-time series 51-8-4. The Trojans are 28-4 against the Cougars in PAC-10 play. Washington State's first PAC-10 win against USC didn't come until 1986. The Trojans are 7-3 against the Cougars over the past ten games.
USC- 52, WSU- 8
Kansas at No. 21 Nebraska (minus 21)
Kickoff: 7:00
TV: Fox Sports Network
Bill Callahan seems to have Nebraska on the right track. Defeating Michigan last year in the Alamo Bowl and losing respectfully to USC two weeks ago may have put his program back on the map. Losing to Kansas would be a major setback.
Nebraska- 33, Kansas- 27
No. 6 Michigan at Minnesota (plus 9.5)
Kickoff: 8:00
TV: ESPN
Only allowing 18.5 rushing yards a game (best in the country) is a big reason Michigan is undefeated this season. The Wolverine defense is allowing just over 14 points a game.
Defensive end LaMarr Woodley, and linebackers David Harris and Prescott Burgess are the anchors of the 5th ranked defense.
Mike Hart has been the driving force for the Michigan offense. Hart is averaging 119 yards rushing a game. Chad Henne doesn't have the best numbers, but when he connects with Steve Breaston and Mario Manningham good things seem to happen. The Wolverines are scoring just over 35 points a contest.
Glen Mason will find out how good his team's running game is this week. The Gophers have already rushed for 907 yards this season. Running backs Amir Pinnix and Alex Daniels are combining for 171 yards a game.
Not only is the offense racking up the rushing yards, but they are scoring as well. They are averaging 36 points per contest under the leadership of quarterback Bryan Cupito. When Cupito does throw he looks for receiver Logan Payne and tight end Matt Spaeth.
Unfortunately for Minnesota their defense is allowing opposing teams to rush for 150 yards and gain just under 350 yards of total offense. Some bright spots for the defense have been the play of defensive end Steve Davis, cornerback Jamal Harris, and linebacker Mike Sherels.
The View
Michigan has dominated the Gophers over the last ten games (9-1) and have won 33 of the last 36 games in the series. However, the last three games have been decided by three points each time. Last year Minnesota won 23-20 after losing heart breakers in 2004 (24-27) and 2003 (35-38).
Glen Mason will be showing his salesman white teeth after beating another point spread against the Wolverines.
Michigan- 28, Minnesota- 25
No. 10 Georgia at Mississippi (plus 18)
Kickoff: 8:00
TV: ESPN2
Was last week's scare against Colorado an apparition or is Georgia not that good? Playing at Mississippi will be a good gut check for the Bulldogs.
Georgia- 24, Mississippi- 12
Stanford at UCLA (minus 23.5)
kickoff: 10:15
TV: Fox Sports Network
A reason to stay up for this game is that it might be the last season you see Walt Harris as head coach at Stanford. For that matter, this might be the last season you see Harris as a head coach at any school. UCLA is allowing opponents to pick up a first down only 15% of the time on third down. Karl Dorrell, UCLA's head coach, doesn't want to win this game in overtime like he did last year.
UCLA- 40, Stanford- 21
Bowling Green at Ohio (minus 5.5)
Kickoff: 2:00
Ohio (2-2) has been outscored 55-13 the last two weeks. Fortunately for the Bobcats, Bowling Green is coming to town. The Falcons are not the same quality team that they were between '01 and '04. Four weeks into the season the Bobcats offense is not looking very ferocious. Numbers don't lie. OU is ranked 113th in rushing offense, 109th in total offense, 85th in scoring offense, and 83rd in passing offense.
If that's not bad enough, the defense hasn't fared much better. Ohio is allowing over 328 yards to opposing offenses. One bright spot for the defense is their pass defense. The Bobcats are holding quarterbacks to 169 yards and a 97.99 efficiency rating. Unfortunately, Bowling Green's strength on offense is the running game.
BG lost to recent doormat Kent State last week. Not only did the Falcons lose, but they were beaten handily at home 38-3. Bowling Green's two victories this season have come against perennial losers Buffalo, 48-40 in double overtime, and Florida International, 33-28.
Anthony Turner and Freddie Barnes have been splitting time at the quarterback position for Bowling Green. However, Turner didn't play last week due to an injured shoulder. Barnes may not be as good a passer as Turner, but he is leading the team in rushing yards and touchdowns.
Linebacker Terrel White leads the MAC in tackles averaging 11 stops a game. He's helped on defense by linebacker Erique Dozier and defensive end Devon Parks. The trio looks to frustrate Austen Everson, Kalvin McRae, and the rest of the Ohio offense.
The View
The biggest test will be for the defense to stop the Falcons multi-faceted rushing offense. Bowling Green's defense is not the same caliber as Missouri's or Rutger's. Ohio's offense should be able to move up the charts in some of those offensive categories. If Solich's team hasn't lost its fight, the Bobcats should be victorious on Saturday.

Florida- 35, Alabama- 13
No. 24 Georgia Tech at No. 11 Virginia Tech (minus 9)
Kickoff: 3:30
TV: GamePlan
